Terrestrial orchids
Most of the orchids available in the shops are epiphytes, such as the Phalaenopsis. This means they naturally grow on other plants, often trees, without feeding on them. However, the Ludisia is a terrestrial orchid which is a common ground cover plant in south-east Asia, growing along river banks.
There are various types of terrestrial orchids, and the Ludisia discolor is probably the best known type. However, there are around 35 species, of which the Macodes, Goodyera and Anoectochilus all grow well indoors.
Ludisia discolor is an orchid which copes well with modern living room conditions!
